Recipe for Chinese-style Steamed Pumpkin Cake
Steamed Pumpkin Cake is a very healthy sweet snack in China. Actually, we Chinese people don’t really have dessert as a separate course. It’s more like a sweet side dish that we can enjoy whenever we want: whether for breakfast, or as a sweet snack. It’s very simple to make, let’s check it out:
Ingredient
- 250g all-purpose flour
- 1 packet of active dry yeast (about 7g)
- 9 Chinese dates (alternatively, you can use French dates)
- A handful of raisins
- 1 small pumpkin (about 500g)
- A bit of oil for greasing molds
How to make the Pumpkin Cake
Step 1: Start by preparing the pumpkin. Cut it into small pieces, remove the seeds, and steam the pumpkin pieces for approximately 30 minutes or until they are soft and can be easily mashed.
Step 2: Once the pumpkin is cooked, mash it into a smooth puree using a food processor or a potato masher. Ensure there are no lumps.
Step 3: In a mixing bowl, combine the mashed pumpkin, flour, and yeast. Mix well until you have a dough-like consistency. Adjust the amount of flour as needed to achieve a thick but not too sticky dough.
Step 4 :Cover the bowl with a clean cloth and let the dough rest in a warm place for about 1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
Step 5 : Grease your molds or small bowls with a bit of oil to prevent sticking.
Step 6: After the dough has risen, punch it down to remove excess air, and then divide it into portions to fit your molds. The molds should be filled generously but not overfilled.
Step 7: Place 1 Chinese date and a few raisins into each mold on top of the dough. Press them gently into the dough.
Step 8: Steam the molds with the dough in a steamer for about 20-25 minutes. Make sure to leave some space between the molds as the cakes will expand during steaming.
Step 9: After 25 minutes, check if the cakes are cooked. Insert a toothpick or a skewer into one of the cakes; if it comes out clean, the cakes are done. If not, steam them for an additional 5 minutes.
Step 10:Once cooked, remove the molds from the steamer and let them cool for a few minutes. Then, carefully remove the cakes from the molds.
Step 11:Serve your Chinese-style Steamed Pumpkin Cakes warm. Enjoy the delicate pumpkin flavor with the sweetness of the dates and raisins!
